Manhattan is a classic cocktail believed to have originated in the late 1800s or early 1900s in New York City.

The drink is named after the borough of Manhattan, one of the five boroughs of New York City whose area code is (212). Similarly, the recipe for a Manhattan cocktail is 2 oz. Bourbon or Rye Whiskey, 1 oz. Sweet Vermouth, 2 dashes of Angostura bitters (212). Over the years, many variations of the Manhattan have been created, but the basic recipe remains a popular classic cocktail.


  • 2 oz. Bourbon or Rye Whiskey
  • 1 oz. Sweet Vermouth
  • 2 dashes of Angostura bitters


  • Maraschino Cherry


  1. Add ingredients to a mixing glass and stir until well-chilled
  2. Strain into a martini or coupe glass
  3. Garnish with a brandied cherry
